Hamburg – Hamburg has earmarked 9.4 million euros for urban development projects. The new urban development fund is aimed at making districts livelier and boosting residential communities by investing in housing and public spaces.

The Senate of Hamburg has launched an urban development fund. The so-called "Urban Development Fund for Vibrant Districts" is designed to boost social cohesion and the standard of living in districts across the city in northern Germany, according to an article from Hamburg News.

An initial 9.4 million euros will go towards 23 development projects beginning in 2021. The measures seek especially to improve the standard of living in districts with a high population density. By 2025, a total of 24 million euros is expected to fund new residential environments and public spaces.

As well as raising the standard of living, the new fund will foster projects that strengthen neighbourhoods and improve social stability, according to Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Senator for Urban Development and Housing. She says in the article: "We want to expand social infrastructure in the districts and modernise it to meet needs, resulting in more communal uses for different groups.”

There are plans to invest in housing and meeting points, as well as in projects such as skate parks. District offices and authorities in Hamburg had submitted 36 proposals, of which 23 were selected for funding, writes the article. Another call for projects is scheduled for 2021.
