Qingdao – The Sino-German Ecopark in Qingdao will soon be home to Asia’s largest passive house settlement. The project is designed by the same team of architects behind the world’s largest passive house complex in Germany.

Frey Architekten are at it again: after winning awards for the world’s largest passive house settlement currently under construction in Heidelberg, Germany, the team at Frey Architekten, together with their Chinese and German partners, are now developing Asia’s largest passive house settlement in the Sino-German Ecopark in Qingdao.

Similar to the holistic living concept at Heidelberg Village, the passive house pilot project in Qingdao will provide various types of housing to accommodate a wide range of residents, including the disabled and the elderly, writes Frey Architekten. The 200-acre residential complex is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.376 tonnes and save 12.72 million kilowatt hours of electricity.

When the project is completed, the houses will be certified by the German Passive House Institute (PHI). Wolfgang Feist, founder and director of PHI in Darmstadt was among the guests and speakers to attend the ground-breaking ceremony.

The construction project is regarded as a flagship pilot project for future construction efforts in China.
