Dhaka - The government of Bangladesh is planning to build the country’s first smart city by 2018. Purbachal will have its own solid waste management system, efficient public transport and affordable housing.

Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. But following in the footsteps of its neighbour India, the government is now planning to build the country’s first smart city.

“The government has a plan to build Purbachal new town project as a smart city where quality infrastructure will be built with modern amenities for a high standard of living,” said M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury, the head of the country’s development authority.

As the Dhaka Tribune reports, Purbachal will become the biggest planned township in the country. It would have a separate water supply and sewerage system, a waste treatment plant and power production, and a supply system on all its own.

The project will also have measures in place to keep the smart city clean, green and eco-friendly, added Chowdhury, including efficient public transport and affordable housing. Of the 27,068 plots in the new town, 25,016 are residential. There are also plans to build a 70,000-seat stadium and a 142-storey tower – both of which would be connected to the metro service – as well as the country’s largest exhibition centre to host the Dhaka International Trade Fair.

Purbachal will be home to around 10 million people in the next three years.
