Nairobi - UN-Habitat has launched the City Project Team. This aims to facilitate the introduction of measures to make African cities more resilient against the impact of climate change.

The settlement program of the United Nations (UN) has launched the City Project Team (CPT) together with the development association Oxfam. This will operate within the framework of the Building Urban Climate Resilience in South-Eastern Africa project, which has been set up to run for a period of four years. Cities located in the African nations of Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and the Union of Comoros stand to benefit from this, as detailed in a press release issued by UN-Habitat.

The CPT should facilitate the introduction of measures that aim to increase resilience against climate change. In specific terms, elevated roads and bridges as well as safe havens are planned for Morondova, a town located on the west coast of Madagascar, with the aim of reacting to the increasing frequency of flooding in the area. The capacity of drainage facilities is also to be improved. Last but not least, plans have been drawn up to protect mangroves and construct urban green spaces. The CPT should facilitate implementation of these plans, ensure quality and deliver a positive impact for the population of Morondova.
