Basel – Seven Swiss cities have launched a joint initiative. With the project “Smart Inter-City – our joint path to the future”, they intend to put in place the foundations to jointly develop into Smart Cities. The cooperation is taking place within the framework of the next national exhibition.

Basel, Bern, Lugano, Lucerne, St.Gallen, Winterthur and Zurich are already working together for the next national exhibition “NEXPO – the new Expo”. Within the framework of this event, the cities are now also keen to develop joint models for future collaborations in the area of Smart Cities, as revealed in a press release issued by the canton of Basel-Stadt. Its cantonal and urban development department in the President’s Office is taking a leading role in the initiative’s first pilot project.

The participants in the “Smart Inter-City – our joint path to the future” project are aiming not only to develop models for the cooperation of Smart Cities, but also to implement these practically. By networking the seven cities, pre-existing synergies are to be leveraged. The project is also open to partners from the worlds of business and science, as well as to the general public.

The pilot project is to be advanced at the respective innovation locations in each of the participating cities. In Basel, for example, this includes the Smart City Lab Basel, which was launched by the canton itself alongside SBB AG.
