Zurich – Progress is being made on the further development and enhancement of the Zurich City university district. Green space and greenery are a major consideration in the plans. One of the buildings will even be totally surrounded by plants. This will help regulate the urban climate.

With the Zurich City university district (HGZZ), a new university and hospital quarter is being created in the center of Zurich. Project planning is making progress, as the canton of Zurich outlined in a press release. One particular focus is the provision of green space. In fact, greenery will adorn the entire façade of Campus Mitte1 at University Hospital Zurich, so the building will be totally surrounded by plants. A photovoltaic system is also being installed on the roof to provide renewable energy. The University Hospital reportedly expects to submit a planning application for Campus Mitte1 in autumn 2021. The building should then open in summer 2028.

Other key elements of “the green heart of the HGZZ”  include the Gloriapark – currently the town park – and the park bowl, as the canton explains in its press release. New trees will be planted on the central reservations on Rämistrasse and Gloriastrasse. The aim of these green spaces and greenery is above all to regulate the urban climate, which is seemingly becoming ever warmer.

The canton also reports on other planned building expansions in the context of the HGZZ project. Over the next few years, construction will begin on the ETH’s main building and a refectory and multi-purpose building complete with polyterrace. The sports facilities and food and drink options will be enhanced in the course of the renovations.

In addition, the FORUM UZH project is being continually optimized. This will offer a new place for researchers, students and the general public to meet. Construction of FORUM UZH is scheduled to begin in 2023.
