Mountain View, CA – Google Maps now offers real-time bikeshare data in 24 cities around the world, including Zurich. More cities are on the way.

Bike sharing is growing in popularity around the world, and there are now an estimated 1,600 bikeshare systems and more than 18 million shared bikes in urban centers worldwide, according to a Google blog post.

To help make this system more accessible, the internet giant has been running a year-long pilot project in New York City to help travellers and commuters locate bike sharing stations and see how many bikes are available at each station in real-time via Google Maps.

Last week, it rolled out this feature to a total of 24 cities in 16 countries: Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Chicago, Dublin, Hamburg, Helsinki, Kaohsiung, London, Los Angeles, Lyon, Madrid, Mexico City, Montreal, New Taipei City, New York City, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco Bay Area, São Paulo, Toronto, Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich

Google Maps partnered with Ito World for the global expansion. According to  Smart Cities Dive, Ito World developed a bikeshare data feed for over 400 cities worldwide to improve public transportation and micromobility.

The new feature in Google Maps helps users not only locate bikeshare stations and bike availability, but also find out whether there’s an empty station near their destination to leave their bike. Google plans to expand the feature to more cities around the world.
