Nairobi – The first ever UN-Habitat Assembly opens in Nairobi on Monday. Participants from all over the world will discuss urban issues under the theme “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”.

More than 3,000 participants from around the world are expected to attend the first UN-Habitat Assembly, including mayors, local authorities, business leaders, non-government organizations and representatives from youth and women groups. According to Maimunah Mohd Sharif, UN Under-Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director, the large number and diversity of participants shows that the future of our cities and human settlements is a concern for all.

“This is a pivotal gathering of Member States,” Sharif said of the five-day meeting, which is open to all 193 Member States of the UN. “I am really looking forward to the discussions with businesses, local governments and NGOs on how innovation in cities can provide solutions to achieving sustainable and inclusive urban prosperity and opportunities for all.”

In addition to meetings, the assembly will host the Urban Solutions Exhibition showcasing innovative products and designs that address urban challenges. Plenaries and side events will also review major trends and international best practices related to human settlements and sustainable urbanization.
