London – Environmental impact organisation CDP has released its first-ever ranking on cities’ actions to cut emissions and set climate strategies. Of the 596 cities ranked, 43 scored an ‘A’.

Barcelona, Cape Town, Hong Kong, London, Paris and San Francisco are among the 43 cities to have made it to CDP’s ‘A’ list of the top cities for climate leadership and action. An ‘A’ score means that a city is demonstrating strong climate adaptation and mitigation strategies and is consistently tracking its emissions.

Fourteen of the ‘A list’ cities aim to be climate neutral or carbon neutral by 2050, including Melbourne, Reykjavik and The Hague. Four cities (Canberra, Paris, Minneapolis and San Francisco) have adopted 100% city-wide renewable energy targets, something that Reykjavik has already achieved.

CDP launched its first-ever ranking for cities in a bid to encourage climate action at the city level.

“The need for action on climate change has never been more urgent, as the latest report from the IPCC has warned,” said Kyra Appleby, Global Director for Cities, States and Regions at CDP.

“Cities house more than half of the world's population and are responsible for over 70 per cent of the world's energy-related carbon emissions, so they could make or break efforts to tackle climate change.”
