Kloten ZH – The new services centre at Zurich Airport – The Circle – has now received Minergie certification, the Swiss sustainability construction standard for new and renovated buildings.

The new buildings that comprise the services centre The Circle at Zurich Airport are certified according to the highest LEED Platinum standard, according to a press release from Zurich Airport. Now, The Circle has also received Minergie certification for its energy systems.

Minergie buildings are characterised by very low energy requirements and a high proportion of renewable energies. As Zurich Airport explains, The Circle boasts a high proportion of renewable energy via geothermal probes and photovoltaic systems. This proved a decisive factor for the Minergie certification.

According to the airport, the new services centre is also an outstanding example of compact construction, providing a usable area of 180,000 square metres on an area of just over 30,000 square metres. Heating and cooling are supplied via energy piles over the earth as storage, while a photovoltaic system on the roofs of the buildings acts as another natural source of energy. The demand for energy and water is greatly reduced through recovery.

The Circle is due to open in 2020.
