Zurich – The Government Council of the Canton of Zurich has submitted the latest spatial planning report to the Cantonal Council. It focuses on high-quality inner urban development.

According to the Canton of Zurich, “the spatial qualities of the Canton of Zurich in terms of population growth and the renewal of the building stock can only be maintained if residential areas are developed internally”. With the tenth edition of the Spatial Planning Report, the Government Council is again reporting to the Cantonal Council on the status of spatial planning in the canton after four years.

Case studies on “high-quality inner urban development” are presented in the report, which also demonstrate the challenges of such an inner urban development. Towns and cities must “deal intensively with the building stock and take a holistic view of their development perspectives, i.e. spatial, temporal and across several policy levels”.

Recreational areas play a special role here. With the increasing density inwards, the demand for corresponding open spaces and green areas are on the rise, and the demands on these areas are also growing.

When it comes to spatial planning projects, it is also necessary to find a transparent balance between the different demands placed on the corresponding spaces. The Canton of Zurich is involved in a large number of such projects every year. The new Spatial Planning Report also contains an overview of projects and procedures from 2014 to 2017.
