Zurich – The second Roche Tower in Basel will become Switzerland’s highest building. LafargeHolcim is delivering special concrete and tailor-made cements for construction of the 205-metre high building.

Upon completion in 2022, the second Roche Tower in Basel will be Switzerland’s highest building at 205 metres and 50 storeys. Cement giant LafargeHolcim, which is headquartered in Zurich, participated in the first Roche Tower and has started delivering the first materials for construction of the second tower.

“We are proud to lend our experience to this landmark building,” Marcel Cobuz, Region Head Europe at LafargeHolcim, said in a statement.” Our Swiss technical teams have developed special concrete and two tailor-made cements.”

The materials specially developed by LafargeHolcim for this project “are not only performance optimized but also reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30 per cent compared to traditional Portland cement,” added Cobuz.

LafargeHolcim is using cement and aggregates from nearby plants, and the tailor-made production planning allows for just-in-time rail delivery. With this focus on “locally produced building materials”, CO2 emissions are minimised thanks to shorter transport distances.
