Singapore - Flexibility underpins Singapore’s long-term urban development plans, as showcased in a public exhibition from the Urban Redevelopment Authority. It represents Singapore’s planning concepts and strategies for the next 50 years and beyond.

Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has launched a public exhibition for the Long-Term Plan Review (LTPR) entitled “Spaces For Our Dreams”, announced an article in The Business Times. The exhibition showcases planning concepts and strategies for Singapore’s development, with a focus on enhancing flexibility and optionality of land use to balance various needs.

As part of the LTPR, the URA plans to provide a greater variety of inclusive housing by increasing homes in convenient locations, offering different home types and building a mix of public and private homes. It also aims to improve the flexibility of spaces with, for example, a daytime co-working space that converts to host community events in the evenings. Where possible, rooftops of multi-storey car parks can be repurposed for uses such as community gardens, writes the article.

The plan also includes expanding polycentres to bring work closer to homes and shows how the Central Business District (CBD) will be transformed into a mixed-use precinct by offering more recreational amenities. There is also a focus on strengthening mobility networks. According to the article, by the 2030s about 360 km of new rail network will be built, putting 8 in 10 households within 10 minutes’ walk of a train station.

The URA says in a statement: “We will continue to refine the concepts, strategies and proposals to ensure they stay relevant to the needs of Singaporeans and Singapore.” The exhibition takes place at The URA Centre Atrium from June to August 2022.
