Amsterdam – Dutch online travel agency TravelBird has compiled its rankings for the world’s greenest cities. Reykjavik has come out top. With Bern and Zurich, the ranking also includes two Swiss cities in the top 25.

By preparing this ranking, TravelBird aims to make environmentally-minded travellers aware of the best urban destinations for them, it was reported in a press release. The results clearly show “which cities are making large efforts to be sustainable by preserving ecological areas”.

In the overall ranking, Reykjavik is at number one, followed by Auckland, Bratislava, Gothenburg and Sydney. Bern comes in eighth, after Prague and Rome. As a second Swiss city, Zurich was also assessed for the study and ranked at number 22. The evaluation is based on the square metres of green space that a city has for every inhabitant.

TravelBird also presented the data as a percentage, calculating how much each type of green space accounts for in every destination. In this respect, Prague is in the lead, just ahead of Madrid and Vienna. Zurich is at 15, followed by Bern two places behind. In the category defined by forest and woodland, Bern achieves a great ranking of fourth, behind Auckland, Gothenburg and Bratislava. Zurich is at 13.
